Your chance to make tenancy deposits fairer

Deposits are behind some of the most common problems we hear about from renters:

  • tenants' money doesn't get protected
  • the struggle to get deposits back when moving home
  • and many of us are unable to afford them in the first place

The good news is the government is looking at how the deposits system can be improved and is asking for renters' experiences until 5 September. This is your chance to share your experience of deposits and help change the system.

You can respond directly to the Ministry of Housing’s “call for evidence”, but we’ve also set up our own survey to gather information that the government’s questions might miss. It takes just a few minutes to complete and we’ll feed your anonymised responses into our submission to the Ministry.

This listening exercise comes after our own report last year pushed the Ministry of Housing to set up a working group, which we’ve been part of for the past year.

Over the years we’ve heard about:

  • how hard it is to move out of an unsuitable home when you don’t have the deposit
  • the different tricks dodgy landlords use to claim deductions
  • how the length of the dispute process can discourage tenants from challenging deductions

We want to know if any of this has happened to you.

Your answers could help bring in a new system where deposits can be “passported” between tenancies, or change the dispute process so that it’s easier to challenge dodgy deductions.

Please take the Generation Rent survey.

Then, when you’ve done that, take a look at the government’s own survey. It is longer than ours, but it’s really important that the government hears from renters.
