Generation Rent has launched a new campaign, urging renters to send a real, printed postcard to the new Housing Secretary Angela Rayner, urging the government to introduce a limit on how much landlords can raise the rent.
England hasn’t had proper rent controls since 1988. Since then, private renters have risen by around 1,200%. To put that into perspective, if the price of groceries had increased at the same rate as rents have, a basic 10-item food shop would cost nearly £120 today, which is more than five times what it actually is.
With over a third of private renters currently living in poverty, and with another inflation spike looming, we urgently need the government to act by bringing a limit on how much landlords can increase rents.
Sending a real, printed postcard, which combines a clear call to action and your personal stories, often stays with politicians for a lot longer than an email, and proves a really effective way to get through to people in power.
