On 20/05/2026, Generation Rent staff, together with a number of supporters, attended a reception at 10 Downing Street to mark the Renters’ Rights Act finally becoming law.

The reception was attended by tenants from across the country, alongside people from campaigning organisations that had played a key role in calling for the changes.
Ben Twomey, Chief Executive, spoke about how the Renters’ Rights Act is finally a recognition that the way we rent has changed dramatically over the past forty years and that renters need to be able to put down roots in their communities, without the fear of being evicted for no reason. He then handed over to the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer who talked in glowing terms about how renters will benefit from their new protections.
Earlier that day, Generation Rent also met with the Minister for Energy Security Martin McCluskey to discuss the government’s ambition to improve the energy efficiency rating of private rented homes, with the objective of reducing fuel poverty.
