Ahead of the upcoming Scottish Parliament elections on May 7th, Generation Rent is urging all political parties to commit to strengthening security for renters.
Our new manifesto: ‘Standing up for renters in Scotland’ outlines four key asks of whoever forms the next Scottish government. These are:
- Tackle the insecurity emergency
- Compensate renters forced to move
- Support the rent cap
- Update the Scottish Landlord Register
Homes are the foundations of our lives, but Scotland is facing a housing emergency, with over 100,000 households on the waiting list for a social home and a record number trapped living in temporary accommodation.
Scotland has led the UK in bringing in greater rights and protections in recent years. But, once the Renters’ Rights Act is put into action in England, Scottish renters will be more vulnerable to ‘landlord need’ evictions than renters in England and Wales.
Therefore, whoever forms the next government needs to be more ambitious in tackling the housing emergency, making sure every private renter has a safe, secure and affordable home.
