More than a third of the UK population lives in rented housing, but 90% of our MPs represent more home owners than renters. That makes any reform of the housing market to benefit the propertyless a huge mountain to climb.

But as more people get shut out of home ownership and stuck in renting our political power grows. By 2021 Generation Rent predicts that 104 MPs will represent more renters than home owners, so if they want to keep their jobs then they will need to make sure the housing market works for everyone.
