Right now, due to lack of regulation, nobody knows how many landlords are currently renting out homes. It means millions of people are living in homes that might not have gone through the right safety checks
The number of people living in privately rented homes is growing fast. You don't have to pass a test to become a landlord - all you need is a property to rent. Currently 72% of landlords rent out just one property and 88% rent out less than three - the huge majority of which are not part of professional industry bodies or accreditation schemes that can give them support to rent safely.
That's why we are calling for a national landlord register. This would mean that landlords would have to meet certain standards in order to rent out their homes and could be struck off if not. It would also mean renters could check up on their landlord before signing a contract.

We, the undersigned, call on the Housing Secretary to help local authorities identify and prosecute criminal landlords, protect tenants from exploitation and improve the reputation of professional and law-abiding landlords by introducing a national register of landlords.
