What makes your house feel like home?
For those lucky enough to own their home it might be the freshly washed sheets, the family photos, or their favourite spot on the sofa.
For private renters’ however one answer dominates – protection from eviction.
Currently, private renters can be evicted without reason and given just two months to pack up and move out.
Only when private renters are better protected from eviction can we have confidence our houses can be our homes.
On 17 July 2024, the King announced a new Renters’ Rights Bill which will abolish these Section 21 “no-fault” evictions.
Join our campaign for better protections from evictions out of the tenant's control.
- Giving tenants 4 months’ notice to find a new home – rather than the 2 months we currently have
- Protecting tenants from a no-fault eviction for the first 2 years of a tenancy – rather than only the first 6 months
- Stopping landlords who evict tenants on no-fault grounds from re-letting the property for 12 months if they change their mind – rather than the 3 months the government is planning
- Requiring the landlord to pay the tenant 2 months’ rent to help find a new place to live and move home
- Requiring landlords to list the property for sale with a sitting tenant for six months before seeking an eviction
